Event Organizers Announce Peekskill Celebration Will Not be Held in 2013
Peekskill, NY – Officials from Peekskill Celebration, a non-profit entity that organizes, manages and presents Peekskill Celebration, announced today that the annual August event held for the last 17 years at Peekskill’s Riverfront Green will not be held in 2013.
“Recently, we were informed of the City of Peekskill’s financial challenges and understand that tough budget cuts associated with personnel/overtime expenses for special events like Peekskill Celebration became necessary. We respect the difficult decisions the City had to make and we thank them for their past support, but the complexity of Peekskill Celebration requires logistical support services that can be provided only by the City and its workforce. Without the City’s manpower and sponsorship we will not be able to present Peekskill Celebration in 2013,” said Bruce Lindenbaum, Chairman of the Board of Peekskill Festivals, Inc. which runs Celebration.
Lindenbaum said the board explored all of its options to replace the funding for personnel removed from the 2013 city budget needed for Celebration, but concluded that Celebration was not in a position to raise the additional funds.
“Celebration’s legacy is that we all partnered together to provide a safe and spirited environment in which to enjoy a weekend of family-oriented activities at our beautiful waterfront. The addition of the Cancer Awareness Dragon Boat Race put a human face on this dreaded disease, while the Entergy Fireworks Extravaganza became a crowd favorite, attracting many to the Peekskill shoreline. Both provided memorable moments that we can cherish forever,” said Cathy Montaldo, Executive Director.
“We thank all of our supporters for their support and share their disappointment with this difficult decision,” added Montaldo. ###
